Roadside Flowers with the iPhone 5 and Snapseed

Enjoy the flowers, stop and smell the roses every now and then. It’s for tough guys too. (Oh, and me)

And hey, the camera phone is pretty capable in this situation! So I thought I’d share:

Asahi Pentax ME with SMC Pentax 50mm 1.7 Test Shots

Here are the images from the first roll of Agfa Vista 200 put through the Asahi Pentax ME and SMC Pentax 50mm 1.7 I received last Saturday!

I had to give the camera a good bit of tender loving care but as you’ll see it was well worth it. Also I tested a lab nearby that I hadn’t used, AG Photo Lab, check them out at http://www.ag-photolab.co.uk

I was really happy with their service. A tall, friendly chap called Nick (iirc) served me and he was super helpful, even showing me steps of the process and putting the roll through quicker to save my anxiety levels. Top service. I will return very soon!

Please leave a comment below, so I can see what you like and perhaps any experiences you’ve had, any posts you’ve written, feel free to share them.

I do really like this set up, and with some further attention this could become one of my favourite project cameras. I think really though all I have left to do to restore the camera is get the battery cover screw thread in working order. The rest is sweet.

So here they are, my Asahi Pentax ME with SMC Pentax 50mm 1.7 Test Shots:

Nikon EM Test Photographs | Agfa Vista Plus 400

Further to yesterday’s test shots, I want to share some test shots today to show that this is a capable camera. But…

You remember I got hold of the cheap Agfa Vista Plus 400 film from Poundland? Well… I’m not sure if this film is causing a problem or something else. I’m noticing a green hue, that i’m having to deal with to some degree in photoshop. Also some banding on the image, but perhaps the sensor needs a look. I thought it might be the scanner I was testing so I had Jessops, purely for tests, scan it at hi res to see the difference. I think the sensor needs a check and a more high end roll needs to go through it to see how that fares.

However it’ll be awesome for black and white and some colour fun anyway! I’m enjoying it.

All these were with the Nikon EM of course, with the bog standard, but very decent 50mm 1.8 Series E. I’m after something longer now. So look out, it could be you next!

Nikon EM Test Images – How did the old Nikon EM do?

How did I get on with the Nikon EM Test? Check out the set of Nikon EM test images, mostly documenting fresh graffiti in the Digbeth area near Birmingham City Centre and a few around the shops and markets.

The film used was a Poundland goodie, Agfa Vista Plus 200! I found some 400 after, I’m hoping for great things from it.

It was definitely a fine experience, read about it after the images!

So did you pick any favourites? You can’t beat film photography for the look, the special feel to the images, even in low res scans.

I found it quite interesting, going back to when I shot on film 100% of the time, when there was no real choice. Even as time progressed, I didn’t want to go digital and left it until close to 2000 to do so. The Nikon EM held up well. You had to make sure the film was loaded properly, none of this stick the memory card in, format and go nonsense.

I notice a few frames had to be cropped a little as it didn’t fully fit right. These imperfections give it the magic. The texture too, and in this case, the strange hues, the gorgeous tones. No amount of photoshop work to your average digital file can replicate the experience. And for the experts that can come close, you can’t replicate the experience of shooting film, let alone a full manual camera.

Speaking of full manual slr cameras, which the Nikon EM is not, look out for a future set of blog posts about something very special from film photography history!

Nikon EM First Impressions – Film Photography Observations

How did I get on with the Nikon EM that I posted about in the previous blog post? I’ve recorded my first impressions for you. There’s a few funny observations actually, to do with using a film slr for the first time in a couple of years. I won’t write about it…

Check out the short video, set it to HD:

Nikon EM First Impressions – Film Photography Observations

I know many of you that use film or used film for many years will appreciate how I feel! It was a great experience and the Nikon EM performed very well. A real treat to use.

Go shoot film now! And share the results!

Thanks
